HBS Charitable Trust

The Hitchin Boys’ (HBS) School Charitable Trust was established in 1989 with the aim of helping to raise additional funds to support the development of facilities at the school.

Hitchin Boys’ School provides many opportunities for extra-curricular activities for students, including a rich variety of experiences in sports, the arts, clubs and other creative pursuits including music concerts and the annual school play. We also offer workshops, activities and visiting speakers from external organisations which enrich the curriculum and students’ experiences during their time at HBS.

For most of these opportunities, we do not make a charge. Staff volunteer their time as sports coaches and club and activity leaders but there are other costs associated with these activities, such as the sports equipment, running of the minibuses, running and maintenance of the Astroturf pitch, supplies used in clubs such as art, science, license fees for the rights to plays etc.

Unfortunately, the core funding received from the government does not cover the resources that are used in these activities. To help fund these opportunities, we are asking parents to consider making a monthly donation to the school (you can make a quarterly or annual donation if you prefer). Many parents choose to make donations over the five or seven year period they expect their child to attend HBS, but donations can be made for any number of years. The easiest way to make a regular donation is via the Standing Order Mandate and Gift Aid Form (link below). The benefits of this are as follows:

  • If the Gift Aid Certificate is completed we can claim an extra 25p in the pound from the Government.
  • It saves us writing letters every year to parents asking for money and parents do not have to worry about remembering to send the contribution.
  • The money is paid at regular intervals and not in one amount.
The Order can be cancelled at any point.

If you have not already signed up, please consider supporting the school if you are able. Your support will benefit your child as well as helping the school maintain the extensive variety of extra activities we offer.

Please complete the mandate below and either return it to school in an envelope marked FAO: Finance Department, or scan the completed form and email it to

The Charitable Trust is also able to receive general donations made in support of the school, by individuals, business and other organisations. If you wish to make a donation, you can either use the donation form below, or contact the Trust via

To maximise the amount that is received, we are also able to reclaim tax on the donation at no further cost to you through the Gift Aid scheme. The standing order form and donation form both contain the declaration that is required to allow the trust to claim Gift Aid in respect of your donation.
