The School Curriculum

In Year 7, all boys follow the same broad curriculum. Most teaching is in mixed-ability tutor groups, except for Mathematics, where setting by ability begins in Year 7. The current Key Stage 3 Information Booklet, which contains an overview of the curriculum for all departments in years 7, 8 and 9, can be downloaded here.

Setting for English and Science is introduced in Year 8. From Year 8, boys who show a linguistic ability are able to study a second foreign language,
either Spanish or German; the remaining pupils have additional literacy skills lessons. A similar pattern is followed throughout Year 9.

In Years 10 and 11, all boys study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Modern Foreign Languages and PSHE as well as Religious Education. There are additional choices that can be made from a range of non-core subjects, such as History, Geography, Drama, Art, Music, Design Technology and Business Studies. Setting by ability applies to most GCSE subjects. More information on options for Year 9 students can be found by downloading the Options Booklet here.

During years 10 and 11, students will undertake a range of internal examinations in a number of subjects. Teachers will give pupils advance notice of when these will take place. Each department has an Information for Parents section on the left, which contains information on key stages, course content and exam specifications for all year groups.

In Years 12 and 13, a comprehensive list of GCE, AS and A2 levels and a limited number of BTEC courses are offered across the consortium of Hitchin Schools - click here.
