Windtunnel workshop (10 photos)
Last updated: 29-11-2017 at 14:40:31

Earlier in November, 18 budding Young Engineers worked with two Graduate Engineers from Lockheed-Martin in Ampthill to design and build model cars that were as aerodynamically efficient as possible. They also looked at engineering career paths and the kind of projects that Lockheed-Martin are involved in. The car models were tested in a small wind tunnel before the boys had a lecture about the five different types of drag that impact on fast moving objects. They then made an 'improved' version of their car, which was tested again. The most efficient car was 'Blue Streak', with a drag coefficient of 0.056. The designers were Sam C, Tom B and Jamie M-S. The most improved car was 'Motls', which went from a drag coefficient of 1.114 to 0.057. The designers were Henry K, Jacob S and Charlie U.

The HBS Summer Ball, held on Saturday 1st July in a marquee in the school quad was a great success, with over 200 tickets sold for the event. Entertainment from 'The Definitive Ratpack' helped things to go with a swing and the Casino and Funny Photo booth were busy all night. The Head Boy and Senior Prefect team worked very hard to sell raffle tickets and raise money, but also had time to join in some of the fun. Our provisional total profit is over £7,000, which is a tremendous sum. Many thanks to all who supported it, and helped with all the arrangements. See you all again in two year's time!

On 28th June Mr Pearce and Mr Warman took the Young Engineers' Club and the Rocket Club to Anglia Ruskin University's Chelmsford Campus to visit and compete at the Big Bang Fair 2017. Although neither club won any prizes the judges were impressed by the quality of the presentations and encouraged the boys to pursue careers in engineering. There were a number of exhibitors, workshops and presentations related to STEM subjects and STEM careers and the boys are all now considering STEM careers in the years to come.
